NAACP 2018

LEGAL DEFENSE FUND

The School to Prison & Education Committees of the NAACP Miami Dade Branch thank you for saving the date of Saturday, April 14, 2018, to commit to the 2nd series of the four (4) part Afrocentric Talking Circle, Ubuntu ‘I Am Because We Are’. This will take place at Jessie Trice Health System located at 5607 NW 27th Ave Miami, Florida 33142. Registration begins at 8:30 am and the program will start promptly 9 am to 12 pm.

This is a New Year since our 1st series and we are embarking on a new perspective for the 2nd Series of the Ubuntu Talking Circle focusing on the impact childhood trauma plays on our children leading to the school to prison pipeline and how to break the cycle. As educators, mothers and fathers we’ve all been asked too many time’s ‘what is wrong with our children”? The answer may be that they’re suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD. Pediatrician, Nadine Burke Harris, founder and CEO of the Center for Youth Wellness, explains that the repeated stress of abuse, neglect and parents struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues have real tangible effects on the development of a child’s brain. This abuse is taking place through-out America society and we want to bring this to your attention and focus on efforts to identify the children and youth who are at risk. Therefore, this series will focus on childhood trauma’s which may lead to the school to prison pipeline.

This timely topic of the Ubuntu Talking Circle is a Humanizing Afrocentric Approach to Education. We have invited students, parents, teachers, administrators, school board members, community leaders, doctors, nurses, health practitioners, etc. In addition, we have partnered with the Jessie Trice Health Systems to provide assistance in informing the community about this serious disease that is affecting our children. They will also provide services and resources that are available. PTSD may affect someone you know because it affects our children, our schools, our families and our communities. For that reason, we are looking forward to having you as an intricate part of our circle. Together we can unite to have a conversation that will lead to an action plan that can be implemented.

So join us, it is free with a continental breakfast and resource materials. Please RSVP by 4/11/18 by email, drfyng7@aol.com or leave a message at 305 251 2089. Additionally, Live Streaming will be provided by MiamiGo.

Best Regards,

Freddie Young, Chair, School to Prison Pipeline Committee

Dannie McMillon, Chair, Education Committee
